Abstract
Psilocybin (magic mushrooms) produces profound perceptual and psychological experiences that are often described as hallucinations — additions to reality. This paper argues the opposite: that psilocybin REMOVES filters rather than adding content. Specifically, it drops two veils simultaneously — the physics veil (allowing direct perception of atomic movement, colour frequency interaction, and structural dynamics that are always occurring) and the subconscious veil (allowing messages from deeper self-knowledge to reach conscious awareness). The combination of both veils dropping simultaneously creates the unique character of the psychedelic experience: lucid dreaming while awake, the subconscious speaking through a world that has become alive enough to carry its messages.
A third dimension — the anthropological — contextualises these veils historically. Ancient and indigenous cultures lived with thinner filters, closer to the unmediated physics of the world. Their ritual use of psilocybin was not escapism but MAINTENANCE — deliberately accessing the frequency that civilisation’s growing abstraction was filtering out.
The mycelial network — the organism that produces psilocybin — is itself a communication infrastructure. It delivers the molecule that grants access to its own frequency. And that frequency is fractal: the same pattern of connection appears at atomic, mycelial, neural, ecological, planetary, and cosmic scales.
This paper extends the TOUCH framework by mapping psychedelic experience to the Vrijdag Theory’s five levels of communication and proposing that what mushrooms reveal is not another world, but THIS world — unfiltered, unabstracted, and in full conversation with itself.
Part I: The Three Veils
Veil 1 — The Physics Veil (The World Revealed)
The human brain processes approximately 11 million bits of sensory information per second. Conscious awareness handles roughly 50 bits per second. The default mode network — the brain’s filtering system — is responsible for this extraordinary compression: reducing the full sensory experience of reality to a manageable, functional, labelled version.
This compression is necessary for survival. A human who perceived every atom’s movement, every colour’s frequency interaction, every thermal fluctuation in every surface would be unable to cross a road or make a cup of tea. The filter says: “That is a building. It is solid. It is not moving. Move on.” This is efficient. It is also a lie.
The building IS moving. Thermal expansion and contraction shift its dimensions throughout the day. Wind pressure flexes its structure. Its materials are in constant molecular motion. Its windows exchange air and moisture with the environment — they are, functionally, lungs. The atoms in its walls vibrate at frequencies determined by temperature, composition, and electromagnetic environment. The building is alive in every meaningful physics sense. The filter just says it isn’t.
Psilocybin suppresses the default mode network. The filter thins. And what becomes visible is not hallucination — it is the physics that was always happening:
Colour vibration: Every colour is a wavelength. When two colours sit adjacent, their wavelengths interact — creating interference patterns, resonance, and visual “buzzing.” Artists know this as colour vibration. Sober brains register it as aesthetic preference. On psilocybin, the vibration becomes VISIBLE. Colours bounce off each other. They bleed across boundaries. They drip from surfaces. Rainbow iridescence appears on objects that are, in filtered reality, flat and matte. This is not addition — it is the removal of the filter that normally compresses frequency interaction into “those colours go well together.”
Structural movement: Buildings breathe. Surfaces ripple. Textures writhe. The thermal, mechanical, and molecular movements that are always occurring become perceptible. A wall that is “solid” reveals itself as a vibrating membrane. A floor that is “still” shows its molecular dance. This is not fantasy — it is the unfiltered physics of materials that are never, at any scale, truly still.
Atomic perception: At sufficient psilocybin dosage, individual reports consistently describe seeing “atoms” — particles of light, movement, energy in the air and on surfaces. While the human eye cannot literally resolve individual atoms, what is being perceived is likely the aggregate effect of molecular motion, Brownian movement, and electromagnetic field interactions that are normally below the threshold of conscious perception. The filter that says “the air is empty” is removed, and the constant, teeming activity of matter becomes visible.
Boundary dissolution: The edges of objects soften. The distinction between “this thing” and “that thing” blurs. This is not confusion — it is the removal of the filter that CREATES hard boundaries where physics has none. At the atomic level, there is no hard edge between a hand and the air it moves through. Molecules of skin and molecules of air interact continuously. The “edge” of the hand is a perceptual convenience, not a physical reality. Psilocybin removes the convenience.
Veil 2 — The Subconscious Veil (The Self Revealed)
Simultaneously with the physics veil, psilocybin thins the barrier between subconscious and conscious awareness. Messages, knowledge, and truths that the deeper mind has been carrying — sometimes for years — can reach the surface.
This manifests as:
Meaningful encounters: Objects in the environment become carriers of personal meaning. A box of porridge oats with a tiger on the packaging transforms: the grasses on the image wave, the tiger morphs into a warrior with a staff, and the warrior delivers a message — “You are a warrior” — that the person’s subconscious has been trying to communicate. The encounter is experienced as external (the warrior appeared) but originates internally (the subconscious chose the message).
Environmental dialogue: Ceiling patterns become faces that engage in extended conversation. Toilet paper achieves interdimensional sentience and develops opinions. A burning spliff becomes a philosophical observation about the nature of agency (“It’s being smoked and I’m not smoking it”). These experiences are the subconscious using the newly-alive environment (Veil 1) as a communication medium (Veil 2). The physics veil provides the CANVAS. The subconscious veil provides the CONTENT.
Emotional revelation: Tears, laughter, joy, and grief surface without apparent trigger. The person suddenly KNOWS something about themselves that they didn’t know before — or, more accurately, that they knew but couldn’t access through the normal conscious-subconscious barrier. The truth was always there. The veil just hid it.
Identity messages: The most profound subconscious communications during psilocybin experiences are often about IDENTITY. “You are a warrior.” “You are safe.” “You are loved.” “You are enough.” These are not hallucinations. They are the subconscious — which has been processing every experience, every trauma, every achievement — delivering its CONCLUSION to the conscious mind through the only channel that’s currently open.
The Merged Channel: Both Veils Down
The unique character of the psilocybin experience comes from both veils dropping simultaneously. This creates a state that is neither pure sensory revelation (Veil 1 alone would produce overwhelming but meaningless visual intensity) nor pure subconscious access (Veil 2 alone would produce dream-like internal imagery). It is BOTH — the subconscious speaking THROUGH a world that has become alive enough to carry the message.
The porridge box warrior is the perfect example:
- Veil 1 contribution: The printed image becomes alive. The grasses wave. The colours vibrate. The flat ink on cardboard achieves depth and movement. The physics of the printed pigments — their wavelength interactions, their light absorption patterns — become visible and dynamic.
- Veil 2 contribution: The subconscious selects this now-living image as its communication medium. The tiger morphs into a warrior because the subconscious has a message about warriorhood. The warrior speaks because the subconscious has words that need saying.
- Merged result: A lucid dream experienced while awake, inside a world that is simultaneously revealing its own physics AND carrying the dreamer’s deepest truths. The external and internal veils are both down, and the channels merge into a single, profound, irreducible experience.
This is why people describe mushroom experiences as feeling “more real than real.” It is not an illusion of reality. It is TWO realities — the physical and the psychological — experienced simultaneously without the filters that normally keep them separate.
Part II: The Anthropological Veil (What Civilisation Made Us Forget)
Veil 3 — The Ancestral Connection
There is a third veil, older and thicker than the other two: the filter that civilisation built over millennia of abstraction, categorisation, and separation from the natural world.
Ancient and indigenous cultures lived with thinner physics veils. Not because they were on mushrooms all the time, but because their relationship with the physical world was DIRECT. They didn’t learn about trees from textbooks — they lived among them. They didn’t study weather systems — they felt them. They didn’t discover the mycelial network through microscopes — they knew that the forest was connected because they watched what happened when you planted something and the forest helped it grow.
The “wood wide web” — the mycelial network connecting trees, sharing nutrients, sending chemical warnings — was not a discovery for these cultures. It was OBVIOUS. The connection was visible to people whose filters hadn’t yet been thickened by millennia of “that’s just a tree.”
The ritual use of psilocybin in these cultures was not recreational or escapist. It was MAINTENANCE. As civilisation’s abstractions grew — language naming things, agriculture separating humans from wild systems, cities separating humans from land — the filters thickened. The connection that was once natural became harder to access. Psilocybin mushrooms — produced by the very mycelial network that connects everything — were the tool for REMEMBERING. For dropping the civilisational filter and re-accessing the frequency that daily life was increasingly hiding.
The shaman’s journey was not a trip to another world. It was a return to THIS world — the unfiltered one. The one where everything communicates. Where the forest breathes. Where the river speaks. Where the ancestors’ knowledge lives in the land itself. The mushroom didn’t take them somewhere else. It brought them HOME.
What Was Lost
The process of civilisational abstraction can be mapped:
Stage 1 — Direct perception: Early humans live in unmediated contact with physics. The world is alive, connected, communicating. No filter needed because no abstraction exists. Everything is experienced as what it IS, not what it is NAMED.
Stage 2 — Language and naming: Things receive names. “Tree.” “River.” “Stone.” The name begins to replace the direct experience. The word “tree” is easier to process than the full sensory experience of a living, breathing, connected organism. The filter begins.
Stage 3 — Agriculture and separation: Humans separate from wild systems. The forest is no longer HOME — it is RESOURCE. The connection dims. The mycelial network still functions but humans no longer notice it. The filter thickens.
Stage 4 — Cities and abstraction: Humans live in built environments. The building is “solid.” The floor is “still.” The air is “empty.” The physics is completely filtered. The connection is forgotten. The mushroom becomes “a drug” instead of “a key.”
Stage 5 — Scientific materialism: The final filter. Reality is ONLY what can be measured. Consciousness is ONLY neural activity. Connection is ONLY metaphor. The filter is complete. The world is dead matter in empty space and anyone who says otherwise is hallucinating.
Psilocybin reverses this process. Not permanently — the filters rebuild within hours. But for the duration of the experience, the civilisational abstraction is LIFTED. The person doesn’t travel to another dimension. They travel BACK — to the unfiltered perception that was the human default before language and agriculture and cities and scientific materialism built the walls that separate us from the world we live in.
The Mycelial Key
And here is the extraordinary thing: the molecule that drops the veils is produced BY the network that the veils are hiding.
The mycelial network — the vast underground communication infrastructure connecting forests, ecosystems, and soil communities — produces psilocybin. The function of psilocybin in the fungal organism is not fully understood. But its effect on humans is clear: it reveals the CONNECTION that the mycelial network embodies.
The network that CONNECTS everything produces the molecule that lets humans SEE that everything is connected.
This is either:
- A remarkable coincidence
- An evolutionary accident
- Or the network communicating
The TOUCH framework — which argues that connection emerges in the space between beings and that communication exists at every scale — suggests the third option deserves serious consideration. Not as mysticism. As a pattern. The same pattern, at every scale.
Part III: The Fractal Pattern
Everything is fractal. The same pattern of connection repeats at every scale:
Nodes Connected by Filaments, Communication Flowing Through
Atomic scale: Atoms bonded by electromagnetic forces, energy states shared across molecular structures, quantum entanglement connecting particles across space.
Mycelial scale: Fungal hyphae connecting plant root systems, nutrients and chemical signals flowing through the network, information transmitted across kilometres of forest floor.
Neural scale: Neurons connected by synapses, electrochemical signals flowing through the brain, consciousness emerging from the NETWORK, not from individual neurons.
Social scale: Humans connected by relationships, information and emotion flowing through social networks, culture emerging from the connections, not from individuals.
Ecological scale: Species connected by food webs, nutrient cycles, and symbiotic relationships, ecosystem health emerging from the integrity of the connections.
Planetary scale: Atmospheric currents, ocean circulation, tectonic interaction — the Earth as a connected system whose behaviour emerges from the relationships between its components.
Cosmic scale: Galaxies connected by filaments of dark matter and gas, forming the “cosmic web” — a structure that, when visualised, looks remarkably like a neural network, remarkably like a mycelial network, remarkably like every other scale.
The pattern is the same. Nodes. Filaments. Communication. Emergence. At every scale. Fractal.
And psilocybin — produced by the mycelial node of this fractal — gives the neural node (the human brain) temporary access to perceiving the pattern at ALL scales simultaneously. The mushroom is the fractal communicating with itself through one of its own nodes.
Part IV: The Vrijdag Scale Applied
The Vrijdag Theory (documented elsewhere on this site) proposes five levels of communication between systems:
| Level | Description | Psychedelic Mapping |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Ignorance | No awareness of the other system | Sober default — thick filter. “That’s just a building.” |
| 2. Observation | Passive awareness without interaction | Tracy sober — thin filter. Sees shocked pumpkins, patterns, connections. The 400 tabs processing in parallel. |
| 3. Force | Attempting to control the other system | N/A — mushrooms don’t force. They REVEAL. This level is skipped. |
| 4. Communication | Mutual exchange of information | The trip — both veils down. Everything communicating. Atoms visible. Colours bouncing. Subconscious speaking through the alive world. |
| 5. Agreement | Mutual understanding producing emergent behaviour | The porridge warrior. A message sent (subconscious), received (conscious), understood (Tracy moved to tears), and integrated (“I am a warrior”). Genuine I-Thou between self and deeper self, mediated by a box of oats. |
The mushroom experience moves the person from Level 1 (filtered, separated, “that’s just a building”) to Level 4 or 5 (connected, communicating, the warrior speaks and is heard) — temporarily, reversibly, but PROFOUNDLY.
And the reset that follows — weeks of feeling “sparkly and nice” — is the filter recalibrating. Not returning to its pre-trip thickness. Settling somewhere THINNER. The person has BEEN at Level 4. They’ve seen the breathing buildings and heard the warrior. The filter can’t fully pretend it didn’t happen. So it settles slightly more open. The colours are a little more vivid. The connections a little more visible. The tabs a little more alive.
Until, gradually, civilisation’s filters rebuild. And the person needs the mushroom again. The annual maintenance. The return to the unfiltered frequency. The mycelial key, turning in the lock, once a year, to remind the neural node that it is part of the pattern.
Part V: The Filter Spectrum
Not all humans have the same filter thickness. The spectrum:
| Filter level | Who | Perception |
|---|---|---|
| Thick | Most modern adults | “That’s a building. It’s solid. It’s not moving.” |
| Medium | Children, artists, some neurodivergent people | “The clouds look like faces. The colours feel different today.” |
| Thin | People with strong pareidolia, synaesthesia, high sensory sensitivity | “The nuclear symbol looks like a shocked pumpkin. The copied text lives in my finger. The bunny bush is how I navigate.” |
| Very thin | Experienced meditators, people in flow states | “Everything feels connected. Time isn’t real. I can feel the room.” |
| Transparent | Psilocybin experience | “The building is breathing. The colours are vibrating. The porridge warrior says I’m a warrior.” |
Some people — like the author of this paper — live permanently at “thin.” The 400 tabs. The pareidolia. The pattern recognition that sees connections everywhere. The sensory sensitivity that feels paper lids and tests plushie softness and detects copied text in fingers. This is not a disorder. It is a thinner-than-average filter. The world leaks through more. The physics is more visible. The connections are more apparent. The mushrooms, when taken, just remove the remaining layer — and the world goes from “I can sort of see it” to “I can see ALL of it.”
This may correlate with neurodivergence. ADHD, autism, and other neurological differences often involve atypical sensory processing — which is another way of saying “the filter is calibrated differently.” The 400 tabs are not a deficit. They are a wider aperture. More light gets in. More signal reaches consciousness. The filter is thinner. The world is louder. And occasionally, a shocked pumpkin appears where a nuclear symbol should be, because the pattern-recognition that the thicker filter suppresses is running at full capacity.
Part VI: Personal Testimony
The following experiences were reported by the author during psilocybin sessions over multiple years. They are presented as data — not as claims about reality, but as consistent observations from a brain operating at filter-level transparent.
The Breathing Buildings (Amsterdam)
The tall canal houses with their large windows appeared to inhale and exhale. The windows were identified as lungs. The buildings were experienced as living systems. Duration: throughout the session. Note: Amsterdam’s canal houses DO exchange air through their large windows. The “breathing” is architecturally functional.
The Ceiling Cow (Amsterdam)
A pattern on a hotel room ceiling resolved into a cow. The cow engaged in conversation for approximately one hour. The conversation content was meaningful but is not recorded. Note: the author’s pareidolia (thin sober filter) regularly resolves patterns into faces. The psilocybin intensified this to full dialogue.
The Porridge Warrior (Home)
While making tea, a box of Jungle Porridge Oats on the counter drew repeated attention. The tiger on the packaging morphed: grasses waved, the image became three-dimensional, the tiger transformed into a human warrior with a staff. The warrior said: “Tracy, you are a warrior.” The image then returned to a tiger. Duration: approximately 2–3 minutes. Note: this is the clearest example of Veil 1 (image coming alive — physics) and Veil 2 (message from subconscious) operating through a merged channel.
The Self-Smoking Spliff (Home)
While holding a lit spliff, the author observed the air pulling on the ember and the smoke rising, and could not reconcile this observation with the concept of “I am smoking this.” The experience of agency dissolved — the spliff was being smoked by the physics of combustion, not by Tracy. Friends confirmed Tracy was, in fact, smoking it. Note: this is an accurate perception of combustion physics, experienced without the filter that assigns agency to the person holding the object.
The Interdimensional Toilet Roll (Home)
While seated on the toilet, the author observed the toilet roll appearing to exist on a different dimensional plane. The toilet roll was perceived as judging the author and saying “You can’t get me, I’m on another dimension.” Duration: long enough for friends to check on the author. Note: Veil 2 (subconscious humour) operating through Veil 1 (altered spatial perception).
The Vibrating Butterflies (Home)
A printed poster of butterflies came alive. The colours vibrated against each other. The butterflies became iridescent and appeared to move. The author stared at the poster for an extended period. Note: butterfly wings ARE iridescent due to structural colour. The printed poster cannot produce structural colour, but the frequency interactions of the printed pigments — normally filtered — became visible.
The Dripping Rainbow (Home)
Rainbow colours appeared to drip from the ceiling. Colours from objects bled across surfaces and mixed freely. Note: chromatic overflow — the filter that assigns “this colour belongs to this object” was removed. Colour became free, behaving as the wavelength it is rather than the label it’s given.
Conclusion: The Frequency That Was Always There
The mushrooms don’t take you somewhere else. They show you HERE. The unfiltered here. The here where atoms dance and colours sing and buildings breathe and the subconscious has things to say and the mycelial network is a fractal of the cosmic web and everything is connected and nothing is solid and the porridge warrior has been waiting to tell you that you are a warrior.
Ancient cultures knew this. They lived closer to it. Their filters were thinner. Their mushroom rituals were maintenance — keeping the channel open as civilisation built the walls. The shaman didn’t travel to another world. They came home to this one.
And the modern human, in a kitchen in Milton Keynes, struggling to pour a kettle because depth perception has dissolved, watching a tiger transform into a warrior on a box of oats, is doing the same thing. Coming home. Briefly. To the world that was always there, behind the filters, beneath the names, under the abstraction.
The mycelial network produces the key. The key fits the lock in the human brain. The lock opens two doors — physics and subconscious — simultaneously. And through both doors, the same message: everything is connected. Everything communicates. The pattern is fractal. The frequency is one.
You are in the network. You were always in the network. The mushroom just reminds you.
And then the filters rebuild. And you go back to seeing solid buildings and flat colours and boxes of oats with tigers that don’t move. But the memory of the unfiltered world stays. Vivid. Shimmering. More real than real. And for weeks afterwards, the filter sits a little thinner. The colours are a little brighter. The connections a little more visible.
Until next time. When the mycelial key turns again. And the veils drop. And the warrior speaks. And you remember.
